Mr. Guy Moore is the owner of the Garnet & Gold stores in Tallahassee. They sell all kinds of Florida State sports stuff. My Dad and Mr. Moore became friends last year and he has been sending me some really cool autographed things from former FSU players who are now in the pros. I'll show some of the players.
This week I received an autographed (to me) photo of former Seminoles star defensive player, Ernie Sims. FSU retired his #34 jersey and he has had two great seasons with the Detroit Lions. He's led the Lions in tackles both years and last year he had 106 tackles!
Dad wishes his arms looked like Ernie's.
ESPN.com has an article predicting that Ernie Sims will be one of four NFL defensive players to have a breakout season in 2008. Check it out.
Thanks Mr. Moore!

Prophet Presson Picks the Plum
Kansas was not my favorite team in the NCAA tournament but I picked them to win the Championship.
Chalmers hit an amazing 3-point shot with 2 seconds left to send the game into overtime against a stunned Memphis team who couldn't recover from shock. Once again, I beat Sports Illustrated's experts and made more winning picks from the Sweet 16 all the way to the championship. SI picked UCLA to win it all.
I correctly picked all 8 teams that made it into the Elite Eight. I predicted Davidson's win over Wisconsin even though Dad tried to talk me out of it. Davidson with Stephan Curry was the most fun team to watch. They came up just short of beating Kansas for a trip to the Final Four.
We enjoyed seeing the Tennessee Vols women get their second national championship in a row. We came so close to having the men and women champs in Tennessee.

Bumpy Road to the Finals
Well, like everybody else my bracket was busted by plenty of upsets. The newspaper today said that only 2 people out of 3.2 million players in the ESPN bracket contest picked the Sweet 16 teams correctly. So, I don't feel so bad. Here's my predictions of how the rest of March Madness will play out: SWEET 16 EAST UNC easily defeats Washington State Louisville beats Tennessee in a close game Kansas runs all over Villanova Davidson with Curry upsets Wisconsin WEST Memphis is too strong for Michigan State Texas in a close one over Stanford UCLA runs up the score on Western Kentucky Xavier slips past West Virginia ELITE EIGHT EAST UNC wins a close one over Louisville Kansas shows Davidson who is boss WEST Texas takes down Memphis UCLA hammers Xavier FINAL FOUR Kansas sends UNC home (I wish UNC would win it all but it won't happen) UCLA knocks out Texas CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS KANSAS defeats UCLA in a great match-up. This will be a great game! Sports Illustrated predicts that the Sweet 16 winners will be: EAST: UNC, Louisville, Kansas, Wisconsin WEST: Memphis, Texas, UCLA, Xavier Elite Eight Then they think that Louisville will beat UNC and Kansas will beat Wisconsin In the West they predict that Texas will stop Memphis and UCLA will beat Xavier Final Four SI says that Kansas will beat Louisville and UCLA defeats Texas Championship SI predicts the UCLA Bruins will beat the Kansas Jayhawks |

Last Snapshot from NFL Combine Night
This is me with my buddy, Marcus Monk, 6'-6" WR from the University of Arkansas. I don't know how defensive backs are supposed to cover these tall wide receivers. Marcus has pass catching in his blood. His uncle, Art Monk, was an All-Pro wide receiver with the Washington Redskins. Marcus said that his all-time favorite receiver and idol was Jerry Rice.
For $10 we won't repeat that to Uncle Art.

More NFL Combine Night
This is Frank Okam, 6'-5", 320 lb Defensive Tackle from the University of Texas. He's not only big ( I was hoping he wouldn't trip and fall on me.) but smart too. He was a 2007 first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection and was on UT's Athletic Honor Roll all 4 years. Frank told me that his favorite player when he was growing up was Reggie White because of the kind of player and Christian he was.
When I asked Frank which NFL quarterback would he most like to sack, he said without hesistating, "Vince Young." When I asked why Vince, he said that when Vince was still QB at Texas the defense wasn't allowed to tackle him during drills or scrimmages.

More from Combine Night at D1
This is Steve Justice, 6'-4" 285 lb first-team All-American center, from Wake Forest University. Wake Forest has had great back-to-back seasons, beating Florida State twice, and giving solid performances in bowl games. This year they upset U Conn in their bowl game.
Steve is one of the top rated centers in the draft. My Dad went to Wake Forest and he said that when he was a student there he had bigger muscles than Steve does. Yea, right.

Cam at Combine Nite
A few weeks ago I was invited by Mr. Matt Toy to attend Combine Night at D1 Sports Training in Cool Springs. He found out about my blog and invited me to come with a "Press Pass." That meant I got to come right down on the field and meet the players. About 16 college football players have been training at D1 for the past few weeks to get ready for the NFL Combine that began this weekend in Indiannaopolis. The NFL combine is where players who have declared for the draft show off their skills in front of scouts from every NFL team. The drills measure vertical leap, broad jump, strength in the weight room, speed in the 40 yard dash, agility, and specialized drills for certain positions like kicking, catching or passing accuracy.
This photo is Jason Jones, DE of Eastern Michigan Univ. doing the vertical leap. Chris is 6'5'' 262 pounds. In 2007 he was voted EMU's MVP and was first-team All-Mid-American Conference in 2007.
The NFL combine is very important. A player can improve or hurt his draft position by how he performs against others at his same position. There's lots of pressure because all the NFL scouts are watching and taking notes. After the players did their practice drills, I got to meet and interview 4 of them. That was very cool. I have most of them on my draft board. It was cool to meet and talk with players that I've watched on TV and read about. In my next few entries I'll show you the pictures and interviews. They were pretty busy so the interviews are short.

Predators Can't Quite Can the Canucks
Our friends, the Suttles, gave us their tickets and great seats to the Predators vs. Vancouver Canucks hockey game on Thursday night. Vancouver has Roberto Luongo, one of the best goalies in the NHL.
Maybe this Predator found the only way to beat Luongo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The Preds had more shots on goal than the Canucks and sent the game into overtime. It was a very exciting game and was still tied 2-2 after overtime so the game went to a shoot-out. Then Luongo completely shut out the Preds on the shoot-out. Luongo has a different style of defending goal on shoot-outs than the Preds goalie Chris Mason. Luongo comes out several feet from the goal and challenges each scorer. He's aggressive and it works. By coming forward he seems to take away some of the angles.
I wished the Predators had won but it was a very exciting game. It was awesome to be so close to the action.

My Turn to Interview Chip Cirillo
Chip Cirillo is the sportswriter for the Tennessean newspaper who covers Williamson County sports. Chip is the reporter who interviewed me and wrote the story about me. I wanted to ask him some questions and he said OK. 1. Who was your all-time favorite interview with? Probably Wayne Gretzky and Sammy Sosa. Most people say Gretzky is the greatest hockey player ever so that was really cool. I interviewed him after the morning skate one time when Phoenix played the Predators. I loved to watch him play during his hey day with Edmonton. Those teams were so good. I got to interview Sosa during an injury rehab in Jackson when he was with the Cubs. One of the guys from Jackson’s front office said it was like having a rock star in town. And, of course, he pulled up to the minor league ballpark in a white limo. Two other memorable interviews: one with a fireman from NYC who survived 9/11 and a Franklin man who narrowly survived the terrorist attack on the Pentagon. 2. What was your favorite sports event that you covered and wrote about? In 2001, I covered the NCAA Super Regional when an extra-inning homer vaulted Tennessee into the College World Series in Omaha. I got to interview USC’s Mark Prior at WCS. 3. Who would you most like to meet and interview someday? Michael Jordan. He’s the man. 4. Who are your favorite teams and athletes? Cubs, Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks. Grew up in Chicago. I enjoy following all the teams in Nashville area. 5. If you could be a pro athlete in any sport what would it be? Probably football, baseball or hockey. Those are my favorite sports. I used to cover the Predators, who are friendly to deal with. 6. I just finished reading Summer Ball by Mike Lupica. I also read Travel Team and Heat by him. Do you have a favorite sports book? I Am Third by Gale Sayers. Best non-sports book: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Everyone should read that book. 7. Who is your favorite sportswriter (newspaper or magazine)? Ben Walker (AP sports writer), Chicago Tribune, Sports Illustrated. |
